2) Andrinof Appointed as Freeport Renegotiation Team Chief
TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - National Development Planning Minister Andrinof Chaniago, has been appointed as the chief of Contract Renegotiation Team for PT Freeport Indonesia. Andrinof was assigned to prepare recommendations over non-project development exclusively for the US-based mining company by December 2015. The recommendations will be reported to President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo on a monthly basis.
"But I hope that I can complete the task by November 2015," Andrinof said at his office on Thursday, March 26, 2015.
Andrinof added that the recommendations would be related to the impacts of Freeport's activities on social and environmental aspects in Papua.
Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Sudirman Said will work in cooperation with Andrinof as an executive chief of the renegotiation team. Andrinof said that he and Sudirman will soon evaluate Freeport's mining contract.
Andrinof explained that Jokowi may not necessarily approve his recommendations, adding that the decision to extend the mining contracts was up to Jokowi himself.
On February, Sudirman said that the government and Freeport will discuss the renegotiation of mining contract amendment that will expire in July 2015. With an agreement to build a smelter in Papua, Sudirman expected that the government and Freeport would accelerate the renegotiation.
Currently, the Energy Ministry and Freeport are finalizing the six renegotiation points. According to Sudirman, the renegotiation would run smoothly upon the agreement on the six renegotiation points. However, Sudirman shortstopped to confirm whether Freeport’s operation will be extended after the mining contract expires in 2021.
