Manokwari, W Papua (ANTARA News) - A total of 257 houses were damaged, and 35 people suffered minor injuries in an earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale that jolted Sorong city in West Papua, early Friday morning, an official stated.

"A total of 35 people suffered minor injuries, and four others were seriously injured as a result of the earthquake," Derek Abner, the head of the Provincial Disaster Management Agency, stated here on Friday.

He remarked that there were no casualties, but damaged buildings and material losses as a result of the earthquake reached billions of rupiah.

"The West Papua Disaster Management Agency has deployed a team to help the victims of the earthquake," Abner said, adding that the team had set up emergency command posts at some locations in Sorong and the surrounding areas to provide assistance to the victims of the earthquake disaster.

Local Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) spokesman Deny Putirai stated that the epicenter of the 6.8-magnitude earthquake was located 31 kilometers northeast of Sorong at 0:59 southern latitude and 131.27 eastern longitude.(*)

2) Earthquake Cripples Public Activities in Sorong

TEMPO.COJayapura - Mikael, a resident in Sorong, West Papua, said that the 6.8 Richter scale earthquake has collapsed public activities in the city. According to Mikael, schools, offices and other public places has been closed since this morning.
“Since last night, people have been standing by outside their houses to anticipate aftershocks,” Mikael said in a telephone conversation on Friday, September 25, 2015.
Earlier on Friday, September 25, 2015 at 00:53 a.m., an earthquake jolted Sorong. The epicenter was reported to be 31 kilometers away from the northeast of the city, or 68 kilometers away from the northeast of Raja Ampat, West Papua. The earthquake lasted for 10-15 seconds.
Mikael has not yet received reports about the number of people killed in the earthquake. Mikael said that a number of people were injured and being treated at the local hospital.
Local military commander Lt. Col. Teguh Pudji Raharjo said that 240 houses sustained heavy damages and 62 people were injured as a result of the earthquake.
“To this date, we haven’t received reports about the number of people killed in the earthquake,” Teguh said on Friday, September 25, 2015.
Teguh added that the Sorong Military Command Outpost had coordinated with local disaster mitigation agencies and deployed personnel from Manokwari to Sorong.
