"One of the civilians was tortured and died, while two other civilians were tortured by security forces and are still being treated at home," claimed TPNPB spokesperson, Sebby Sambom to Jubi via the WhatsApp messaging service, Monday (5/1/2024).

 

Sambom claimed to have received an official report regarding the incident from the TPNPB leadership in Ilaga.

 

Sambom said that TNI security forces also burned down residents' houses in the villages at the Ila Water Head, namely in Agayome and Yenggerenok villages.

 

"In operations in both villages, the Indonesian colonial TNI burned residents' houses and abused residents, beating and interrogating them. The operations carried out by TNI officers in Agayome village from KODIM Puncak Ilaga district and from the Gome post entered Yengerenok village," he said.

 

Sambom said that apart from burning residents' houses, a priest, Eriak Waker, and his residents were interrogated and tortured.

 

"We consider that the TNI has violated humanitarian law by not pursuing the TPNPB, but persecuting civilians, priests, burning people's houses, etc. "They should be chasing TPNPB, not civilians," he said.

 

As previously reported, joint TNI-Polri officers claimed to have killed one TPNPB member on behalf of Warinus Murib in a firefight with joint TNI-Polri officers following the burning of the Omukia Health Center in Omukia District, Puncak Regency, Central Papua Province on Saturday (3/2/2024 ).

 

"In that incident, the joint forces also succeeded in arresting two people suspected of being part of the TPNPB group with the initials AM and DK (injured)," said Head of the Cartenz-2024 Peace Operation Public Relations Task Force, AKBP Bayu Suseno, in Jayapura City, Sunday (4 /2/2024).

 

According to Bayu, during the firefight, the joint forces also succeeded in confiscating several pieces of evidence belonging to the TPNPB group in the Headwater area led by Jacky Murib, such as firearms, Morning Star flags and ammunition.(*)
