Thanks to the Refugee Action Coalition for the Welcome Refugee' rally yesterday. A large variety of social justice groups and unions were represented at the rally. Speakers spoke about various issues in relation to asylum seekers and included, Irene Doutney, The Greens, Sydney City Coucillor; Sally McManus, sec NSW ASU; Shokufa Tahiri Afghan refugee; Dominique Sherab, Refugee Action Coalition; West Papua Association. The rally then marched from Town Hall to the water at First Fleet Park, Circular Quay to symbolise the welcoming of refugees and the danger of their journey. Joe Collins of AWPA spoke about the West Papuan asylum seekers who arrived on Boigu Island in the Torres Straits last Tuesday fleeing persecution by the Indonesian security forces and deported to PNG.
