Jayapura, Jubi – Several incidents or security disturbances in Yalimo Regency, Papua Pegunungan Province, have caused the construction of the Trans Wamena-Jayapura Road to be temporarily stopped. This was conveyed by the Head of the National Road Implementation Work Unit or Satker for Region IV Jayawijaya, Rendra Subekti.
Rendra said that since November 2024 the construction process of the Trans Wamena Road section, especially in Yalimo Regency, had to be stopped due to shootings.
"To anticipate unwanted things, the work has been temporarily stopped," he said when contacted by Jubi.id on Thursday (6/2/2025).
The work, Rendra explained, will only be resumed on January 9, 2025 at Kilometer 366, namely in Benawa District, Yalimo Regency which borders Keerom Regency. The 50 km road construction was reactivated, after being stopped since November 2024 due to security factors.
"Currently, the work from the direction of Benawa is active again, the mobilization of equipment has also been carried out," he said.
Meanwhile, the road construction from the direction of Elelim, the capital of Yalimo towards Benawa has not been continued until now, considering a number of shooting incidents that occurred along the road.
Moreover, said Rendra, the contour of the road section from Elelim to Benawa is still dirt, so it is quite difficult to pass through several rivers or streams, such as the Yahuli, Kilika, and Edan Rivers.
"The current focus is from Jayapura to Benawa, while waiting for the situation to become conducive. If that can happen, in mid-February 2025 the section from Elelim to Benawa can be continued with a target length of 12 kilometers," he said.
Currently, he added, for the Elelim-Benawa section that has been paved for 6.5 kilometers of the target 12 km. While the remaining 5.5 kilometers are still dirt roads.
55 km have not been paved
Rendra explained, the Trans Jayapura-Wamena Road with a total length of 575 kilometers is currently still in 'on contraction' status, about 50 km has been worked on. Then added from Benawa to Elelim with a target of 12 km of asphalt work in 2025, but only 6.5 km have been paved.
"Our target is to complete it by the end of 2026," he said.
Meanwhile, the road section from Abenaho (Yalimo District bordering Jayawijaya Regency) for the continuation of its work in 2025 is still waiting for budget certainty from the ministry, especially for several work packages.
Even so, during the work, his party did not restrict the entry and exit of vehicles or lanes that cross Jalan Trans, although from information obtained by the National Road Implementation Work Unit there are restrictions imposed by security forces.
"We are only opening and closing the road, as for vehicles not being allowed to cross, that is the authority of the security forces so that it remains functional," he said.
According to Rendra, apart from security factors, the main obstacle in the construction of Jalan Trans Jayapura-Wamena is the weather factor. Moreover, the road is still mostly dirt, so it is quite difficult and restrictions need to be imposed by opening and closing.
Lane vehicles are rare
As a result of frequent shootings in Yalimo Regency, a number of private vehicles and lanes have chosen not to carry out activities towards Yalimo for now.
A resident who did not want to be named said that currently the condition of passing vehicles is quite quiet compared to before there were several cases of violence.
Although at the beginning of this year he still often passed by, he also chose not to pass after 3 pm.
"There are still some who bring vehicles, but for the lanes, most drivers choose not to pull first. If you also want to go, try not to get dark on the road," he said.
Regarding the shooting incident in Yalimo Regency, Head of the Cartenz 2025 Peace Operation, Brigadier General Faizal Ramadhani, appealed to the public to remain calm and help provide information that can speed up the ongoing investigation process.
"We ask for public support so that this incident can be investigated thoroughly and the perpetrators can be identified immediately, for the sake of creating security and peace in Papua," said Brigadier General Faizal Ramadhani through a press release received by Jubi in Jayapura, Saturday (18/1/2025). 2) West Papua mourns Yones Douw: A lifetime dedicated to human rights advocacy
Prominent Papuan human rights activist Yones Douw died on Sunday, 2 February 2025 at his home in Karang Timur, Kali Harapan Village, Nabire District, Papua Tengah Province. His passing represents a profound loss for both the human rights community and the people of West Papua. As one of West Papua’s most senior human rights defenders, Yones remained actively engaged in human rights work until his death.
Over three decades, Yones Douw helped expose hundreds of human rights violations, including the 2014 Paniai Case. He served as a crucial advocate for internally displaced persons (IDPs) in West Papua, ensuring their voices reached both government and the public attention.
On 2 February, Yones reportedly lost consciousness around 1:00 pm. After briefly regaining awareness, relatives brought him to Siriwini Nabire Hospital at 3:00 pm, where he later passed away. He was laid to rest in Nabire on 4 February 2025.
Yones, you will be deeply missed in the continuing struggle for justice and peace in West Papua, but your spirit will inspire us in every effort to make this world a better place. Rest in Peace.

February 7, 2025 18:39 GMT+700
Jayapura, Papua (ANTARA) - The Papua Provincial Government stated that three out of nine districts and cities in the province have started the free health check-up (PKG) program for the community.
The three regions are Jayapura City, Jayapura District, and Biak Numfor District.
Acting Head of the Papua Provincial Health Office, Arry Pongtiku, stated here on Friday that his side is encouraging the remaining six districts and cities to implement the program at the earliest.
“The free health check-up program has begun on January 20, 2025, and we hope that this initiative will extend to all districts and cities in Papua,” he remarked.
According to Pongtiku, all nine districts and cities are generally ready to roll out the free health check-up program, but some areas are facing challenges related to logistics and human resources.
“This free health exam will be conducted at local health centers and several private clinics in partnership with (state health insurer) BPJS Kesehatan,” he remarked.
Meanwhile, Acting Governor of Papua, Ramses Limbong, emphasized that this free examination is an essential program from the central government that must be fully implemented.
“I ask that these health examinations not only take place at local health centers but also be available in places of worship and terminals to make it easier for the community to access them,” he emphasized.
Limbong noted that the free health check-up program will include early detection of common health issues such as blood sugar levels, hypertension, gout, and cholesterol.
“These examinations do not take much time but are very important because they help us understand the real state of public health,” he explained.
He stated that this program is a direct instruction from President Prabowo Subianto as a step in early disease prevention.
“We hope this program will raise public awareness about health, leading to increased productivity,” Limbong remarked.
