3) 359 terrorized Papuans in Intan Jaya take refuge in church
14 hours ago

Jayapura, Papua (ANTARA) - Some 359 residents of Intan Jaya, Papua, terrorized by a shooting of a villager, identified by his initials as RNR, by an armed criminal early this week took refuge in a church over safety concerns.

"Several police officers of Intan Jaya had come to the church and met with the refugees on Tuesday," Papua Police spokesperson Sen. Coms. Ahmad Kamal notified journalists in Jayapura, the capital of Papua Province, on Wednesday.

Most of those deciding to leave their homes and move to the church over fears of being targeted by members of the notorious armed criminal group are the residents of Bilogai Village of Sugapa Sub-district, he stated.

One of the refugees is a local community leader, he remarked, adding that they took refuge in the church over security and safety reasons.

"We want to live peacefully like our brothers and sisters in other areas in Papua," Tomas, one of the refugees, stated.

To this end, Tomas was quoted by Kamal as saying that the villagers support the presence of police and military personnel in their village since they feel terrorized by the armed criminals operating near their village.

A Bilogai villager, identified by his initials as RNR, was shot at close range by an armed criminal at 5:30 p.m. on Monday and sustained gunshot wounds on the face and right shoulder.

According to Kamal, RNR was rushed to the Timika Public Hospital in Mimika District on Tuesday.

The 32-year-old was admitted to the village's public health center for emergency treatment not long after the incident, he remarked.

Following the shooting, a joint team of police and military personnel conducted patrols in the village and Sugapa City, he stated.

RNR's wife, identified as M, confirmed that the assailant was unknown to them. Kamal revealed that M told the police of the attacker having appeared from a street behind their house on Monday. He approached RNR and told him that he wanted to sell kerosene.

The perpetrator told M that he was not carrying a jerry can and asked her to give him one. However, no sooner had she turned, he pointed a short rifle at her husband and opened fire, Kamal stated.

M screamed for help, but the attacker had escaped, he stated.

In connection with the probe into the shooting, the police have summoned M and her neighbor, identified as L, he remarked.

The Indonesian province of Papua has borne witness to a vicious cycle of violence, with armed Papuan criminal groups in the districts of Intan Jaya and Nduga targeting civilians and security personnel over the past two years.

Intan Jaya recorded its bloodiest month in September 2020, with armed groups launching a series of attacks in the area that claimed the lives of two soldiers and two civilians and left two others injured.

The acts of terror have occurred this year. On January 10, 2021, for instance, an Indonesian soldier died in a gunfight in the Titigi area of Intan Jaya District.

Timika, Papua (ANTARA) - The body of a motorcycle taxi (ojek) driver, who was stabbed to death by six armed Papuans on Tuesday, was taken to Timika, the capital of Mimika district, Papua, for a post-mortem examination on Wednesday.

The 40-year-old driver, identified as Rusman HR alias Aco, was reportedly stabbed in a street near Ilambet village in Ilaga sub-district, Puncak district, Papua. He sustained serious stab wounds on the back and died of exsanguination while trying to escape his attackers, said police.

Rusman’s body was flown to Timika on an Asian One Air plane on Wednesday.

The aircraft landed at Timika city's Mozes Kilangin Airport around 8:30 a.m. local time. From there Rusman’s coffin was taken to the public hospital for a post-mortem examination, Papua Police spokesperson, Sen.Coms. AM Kamal, said.

From the hospital, the coffin was transported back to Mozes Kilangin Airport where a Sriwijaya Air flight was to ferry it to Makassar on Wednesday afternoon, Kamal said.

Rusman’s wife, two sons, and two relatives also boarded the flight, he added.

The ojek driver, who was brutally attacked while carrying a passenger, will be buried in his hometown in Pangkep district, South Sulawesi province, he informed.

Shortly after locals reported the murder, several officers from Puncak district's police precinct rushed to the crime scene, but they were showered with bullets by the armed Papuan group, he informed.

"Well, they are definitely armed criminals," Kamal remarked.

The Indonesian province of Papua has been witness to a repeated cycle of violence, with armed Papuan groups in the districts of Intan Jaya, Nduga, and Puncak targeting civilians and security personnel over the past two years.

Early this week, an armed rebel reportedly shot a 32-year-old man at close range in Bilogai village in Sugapa sub-district, Puncak district.

The victim, identified by his initials as RNR, sustained gunshot wounds on the face and right shoulder and was taken to the Timika Public Hospital in Mimika district on Tuesday, said Kamal.

Following the shooting, a joint team of police and military personnel conducted patrols in the village and Sugapa City, he stated.

6) Soldiers, policemen, locals repair bridge near RI-PNG border
11 hours ago

Keerom, Papua (ANTARA) - Several personnel from the Indonesia-Papua New Guinea (PNG) Border Security Task Force and Keerom police precinct worked with residents of Arso sub-district in Keerom district, Papua, to repair a damaged bridge in Arsotami village.

“Essentially, soldiers are from the people, by the people, and for the people,” deputy commander of the Indonesia-PNG Border Security Task Force's 312/KH Infantry Battalion, Capt.Mansyur H Alam, said in a statement issued here on Wednesday.

A joint team from the task force and Keerom police was deployed to the village to repair the bridge which was damaged in recent flooding in several parts of Arso sub-district, Alam said.

Local residents assisted the soldiers and policemen with the repairs as the bridge is vital for the mobility of people and goods near the Indonesia-PNG land border, he informed.

"Helping our people living near the Indonesia-PNG land border is part of our priorities," Alam remarked.

Floods struck parts of Keerom district on February 3, 2021, submerging residential and office areas following incessant heavy rains since February 2, which caused the Tami River to breach its banks.

Floodwaters inundated the Arso Swakarsa-Arso II area, Arso City, and the villages of Asyaman, Yanamaa, Walukubun, Workwana, and Pitewi.

The East Arso Police Sector office was also inundated, deputy chief of the Keerom Resort Police, Commissioner Martha Tolau, informed when contacted from Jayapura.

Police deployed personnel to help residents whose settlements were affected by flooding.

"Several police officers have been deployed to help the flood-stricken residents," she confirmed.

ANTARA has reported on how the Indonesia-PNG Border Security Task Force has been helping locals in Papua province through community services, such as voluntary teaching, serving mobile library, and street cleanup programs.

The task force recently initiated a street cleanup program in Mosso village in Muara Tami subdistrict, Jayapura city. Along with Mosso villagers, several members of the task force removed dirt and debris from the village's streets.

The soldiers who participated in the community service belonged to the Army Strategic Reserves Command's (Kostrad's) Raider 413 Mechanic Infantry Battalion, according to the task force's commander, Major Anggun Wuriyanto.

The residents were enthusiastic to join the street cleanup program, he said.

"We hope the street cleaning activity will be a routine program to keep Mosso village clean and healthy," he added.

He then urged the village's youth to lead efforts to keep their village clean, healthy, and secure. (INE)
