1) Interim President: Remember the 50th anniversary of the OPM declaration
Today we remember the 50th anniversary of the independence declaration of the OPM at Markas Victoria on July 1, 1971. Based on our constitution, the Provisional Government recognises all our declarations as important and historic days in our struggle. Every declaration is a milestone in our struggle and part of the long fight for our freedom. Every sacrifice made over 50 years by the elders in the bush, particularly the West Papua Army, has made a huge contribution to our struggle. Whether you are in exile, a refugee, or active in the solidarity movement, you are the beating heart of the West Papuan struggle. Many people have sacrificed their lives fighting in the bush to protect our country. We remember you.
We recognise all this history as part of the journey to our final destination. The 1971 proklamasi was a direct rejection of the illegal Indonesian invasion and the fraudulent Act of No Choice of 1969. All West Papuans, wherever you are, must remember this important day, a memory that gives us the strength and hope to carry on.
This is a moment for us all to reflect on our struggle and unite to finish our mission and reclaim the sovereignty that was stolen from us in 1963. I call on all our people to unite in one spirit, as one people with with one soul and free us from colonialism through the ULMWP Provisional Government.
Happy 50th anniversary and God bless you all.
Benny Wenda
Interim President
ULMWP Provisional Government

Papua No. 1 News Portal | Jubi
Jayapura, Jubi – General Secretary of the Central Governing Body of the West Papua National Committee or KNPB, Mecky Yeimo called on the Papuan people to commemorate the day of the Declaration of the State of the Republic of West Papua on July 1, 1971. This was conveyed by Mecky Yeimo through his written press statement on Wednesday (30/6). /2021).
Yeimo stated that July 1, 1971 was a historic day for the Papuan people. “July 1, 1971 is the day of the Declaration of the Constitution of the Republic of West Papua at the Headquarters of the Free Papua Organization, Victoria, Port Numbay, West Papua. July 1, 1971 is the day where eternal history is engraved for the people of the West Papuan nation. This historic event will never be forgotten by the people of Papua," Yeimo said in his written press statement.
Yeimo stated that the declaration on July 1, 1971 had created an identity for the Land of Papua and the people of the West Papuan nation in the territory of Sorong-Almasuh. In subsequent developments, the Declaration of July 1, 1971 was followed by the formation of the West Papua National Liberation Army (TPNPB) as the military wing of the Free Papua Organization (OPM) on March 26, 1973.

“July 1, 1971 is a national day for the people of the West Papuan nation, which must be commemorated by the people of the West Papuan nation and society in general. The formation of the TPNPB [is also based on] the Provisional Constitution of the Republic of West Papua which was established in 1971. KNPB together with the people of West Papua throughout the Land of Papua will commemorate July 1, 2021 in a dignified and democratic manner," said Yeimo.
Yeimo asked the TNI/Polri security forces not to interfere with the July 1, 1971 commemoration. "The government and the TNI/Polri must not prohibit the rights of indigenous Papuans in commemoration activities on July 1, 2021. They celebrate it in the form of discussions, seminars, joint prayers and so on," he said. Yeimo.
KNPB invites all people of the West Papuan nation to commemorate July 1, 1971 in their own way, including by praying or fasting. "KNPB calls for commemorating July 1, 1971, because indigenous Papuans are very aware, understand, and know that July 1 is a big day based on the history of the West Papuan nation," said Yeimo.
Meanwhile, the spokesman for the KNPB, Ones Suhuniap said July 1, 1971 should indeed be commemorated, and was sure that the indigenous Papuans knew the history of the Declaration of the Republic of West Papua. “Please celebrate in your own way. We are the generation that must end the suffering of the colonization of the Papuan people," said Suhuniap. (*)

3) During the Otsus period, Papuan women remained abandoned in their own land
Papua No. 1 News Portal | Jubi
Jayapura, Jubi – Papuan women's activist, Sofia “Poppy Maipauw said Papuan women continued to experience violence from 1961 to 2021. The cycle of repeated violence was caused by various central government policies that actually led to distrust of indigenous Papuans, and stigmatization of indigenous Papuans.
This was stated by Maipauw as a speaker in the online discussion of Papuan Women Talk held by the Indonesian Christian Intelligence Association on Wednesday (30/6/2021). If Jakarta's perspective is like that, the problem will never be resolved," said Maipauw.
He reminded that the long history of violence in the Land of Papua led 100 Papuan leaders to meet President BJ Habibie in 1999, and to declare Papuan independence. The request of 100 Papuan figures was then answered by the central government with Law Number 21 of 2001 concerning Papua Special Autonomy (UU Otsus Papua).

However, after the enactment of the Papua Special Autonomy Law, Papuans continue to experience violence and suspicion. Otsus Papua has been going on for 20 years, but political conflicts between Jakarta and Papua often turn into violence that affects Papuan women and children.
“Otsus is given to solve Papua's problems from four aspects of life, health education, economy, infrastructure. This includes the involvement of Papuan women in politics. Over the past 20 years, how many Papuan women have succeeded in business? Of course not much. This is because there is no role given to Papuan women to work. For 20 years, Papuan Special Autonomy has had no impact on Papuan women,” he said.
He stated that Papuan women should be given the opportunity to become agents of peace in Papua. However, in practice, Papuan women continue to be victims of violence in Papua. “We ask the central government to stop bringing the military to Papua. Because of the impact of excessive deployment of the apparatus, Papuan women have always been victims in various operations in Papua," he said.
Maipauw stated that initially many Papuan women activists believed that Otsus Papua could be a way out of the cycle of violence against Papuan women. “Papuan women also think that Otsus Papua will lead Papuan women out of violent conflict. But the result is also not what we imagined. We Papuan women have lost access to political, economic, and even educational aspects. To get something, we have to fight to the death. The economic empowerment policy for Papuan women is very weak,” she said.
Secretary of the Commission for Justice and Integrity of Creation GKI Tanah Papua Klasis Port Numbay, Rev. Anike Mirino said various cases of violence still occur in Papua. This can be seen, among other things, from the armed conflict that caused civilians in the districts of Nduga, Intan Jaya, and Puncak to flee from their homes.

Mirino said in conflict situations, women were always the group most affected by the conflict. “The majority of refugees are mothers and children who are in refugee areas. They left their hometowns, were forced out of their cultural roots, left behind their wealth. It's a major human rights violation that the state ignores," Mirino said.
Mirino said civilians from the three districts also had to evacuate for a very long period of time, even more than a year, so they had to adapt to the environment in which they were displaced. For example, civilians who fled to other districts, to Wamena, the capital city of Jayawijaya Regency, also lost access to education and health services.
“That's one more problem, how they have to be able to adapt their life to the customs of the local community in Wamena [for example]. The people in the refugee camps must receive trauma healing to relieve their prolonged fear, so that these children can get a place in the community and go to school, because they are the future of Papua,” said Mirino.
