An Indonesian church group has urged President Joko Widodo to order an independent investigation into the killing of a priest in the rebellious Papua province.

Local church leaders said Yeremia Zanambani was shot dead by Indonesian soldiers who were hunting separatist rebels in Intan Jaya district on Saturday, but police and the military said he was killed by insurgents.

"It is not easy for us to get to the bottom of this," said the Communion of Churches in Indonesia in a letter to Joko, a copy of which was received by dpa.

"To avoid accusations and counteraccusations, we suggest that an independent fact-finding body be formed," it said.

The Indonesian Gospel Tabernacle Church in Papua said Zanambani, a priest and theologian by training, was shot by government soldiers while tending to pigs on his farm.

Papua police spokesman Ahmad Kamal confirmed the killing but said the perpetrators were what he called "the armed criminal group," referring to the rebels.

Last week, two soldiers and another civilian were killed in separate attacks, police said.

The West Papua National Liberation Army, the armed wing of the separatist movement, claimed responsibility for the killings.

It said that the civilian was an informant for security authorities.

Papua has been the scene of a low-level separatist insurgency since the 1960s.

Clashes between separatist rebels and government security forces have intensified after insurgents killed 31 workers who were building a road in Nduga district in December 2018.

2) Governor Enembe proclaims the indigenous population is 2.3 million in Papua

Jayapura, Jubi – Governor Papua Lukas Enembe proclaimed the population of indigenous Papuans is 2.3 million, based on the recent survey program by regional and municipal governments in Papua Province.
“Therefore, we already have a valid data on the population of native Papuans as a reference for development welfare programs at provincial, municipal and regional levels,” said Governor Enembe on Friday (18/9/2020) in Jayapura.
However, the number of indigenous Papuan population will be officially announced on 20 October 2020 along with the inauguration of the 2020 PON Papua venue.

Statistics Indonesia of Papua Province published that the population of Papua Province as of 2020 is 3,435,530, in which the number of the workforce as of February 2020 is 1,839,409.

Today Papua Province is entering the demographic dividend era in which the number of productive aged population is larger than the unproductive population. Thus, this is the right time to accelerate development growth with the support of human resources. In the meantime, the age dependency ratio for Papua is 43,7 % while 46 % for Papua Barat in 2020. It means the age dependency ratio in the two easternmost provinces of Indonesia is remaining under 50% until 2040.

3) Despite being charged with a ten months sentence, 11 political prisoners are considered heroes of Papuan people

 Admin1 September 21, 2020 2:49 am

Jayapura, Jubi – Eleven defendants charged with treason following a rally turned violent in Sorong last year sentenced to 10 months’ imprisonment by Sorong District Court, Papua Barat, on Thursday (17/9/2020).
The defendants, Daniel Jitmau, Silevster Nauw, Wilson Kofias, Simon Aifat, Lukas Nauw, Yan Piter Yewen, Paulus Syama, Frengky Nauw, Joshua Kinho, Lukas Smas, Melvin Werfete, who had been detained since 27 September 2019, will serve ten months sentence deducted with their detention period.
The Chief of the panel of judges Willem Marco Erari and two members of judges Donald Sopacua and Dedi Sahusillawane said the defendants had been legally proven to have committed crime under Article 110 paragraph (1) of the Criminal Code in conjunction with Article 87 and Article 63 of the Criminal Code following the indictment of the public prosecutor.

After reading the verdict, Judge Erari said the defendants could talk to their legal advisor team to file an appeal if they objected to the decision. However, the defendants and their legal advisor team as well as the public prosecutor, all accepted the verdict.
Fernando Ginuny, the coordinator of the legal advisor team for the eleven political prisoners, said prior the public prosecutor charged the defendants with a year and four months’ imprisonment. But the panel of judges decided to give a ten months sentence instead

“Because our clients already accepted the verdict, we will concern the next arrangement to release them as soon as possible. We expect the government, in this case, the Indonesian Police, to pay more attention to supporting evidence of such criminal acts before determining people with treason. Otherwise, Papuans will become the target of criminalisation by police officers,” he said in a release received by Jubi on Thursday (17/9/2020).
Further, he continued that from some cases handled by LBH Kaki Abu, all were related to criminalisation by police officers, but, then were determined as an act of treason by the police.
“This is a mistake, which turned Papuans to always harbour hatred to the State because the police are not professional in carrying out their duty. As a result, Papuans always feel unfairly treated by the State,” he said.
In the meantime, Natalis Yewen, General Coordinator of Forum Peduli Keadilan Bagi Monyet (Forum of Justice for Monkeys), thanked God and the entire Papuan people for the light sentence.
“Representing my fellows in solidarity, we accept this verdict by the panel of judges to the eleven Papuan heroes,” he said.
According to Yewen, for the State, the eleven defendants might be political prisoners but, for indigenous Papuans, they are their heroes because the defendants were arrested and detained for voicing the problem faced by Papuans. (*)
