Not a history
Sorting out (as one does during Covid -19) and came across a box of papers and photos. Have added them to blog starting with early years and more to follow. Just consisting of events in Sydney (and elsewhere) that I happen to attend and had a camera. Apologises to all other events that took place elsewhere.
Arrival of the 43 West Papuan asylum seekers
The arrival of the 43 asylum seekers in northern Australia in January 2006 created a large amount of media coverage (the cartoonists had a field day) on the issue of West Papua both locally and internationally. It created a diplomatic crisis with Indonesia who withdrew its ambassador to Australia in March 2006. (Ambassador Thayeb returned to Australia in June 2006). In a show of support activists and NGO’s from around the world lobbied the Australian Government urging it to grant asylum to the West Papuans /wrote opinion pieces /letters and held flag raising ceremonies.
