Jayapura, Jubi - Donations and assistance collected by students in Lanny Jaya Regency, Papua this week have been handed over to refugees from Intan Jaya Regency and Nduga Regency in Kuyawage, Lanny Jaya, Papua. The handover was carried out on Thursday (25/3/2021).

This was stated by the coordinator of raising donations and assistance for Intan Jaya refugees in Lanny Jaya, Melkyanus Wenda to Jubi, Saturday (27/3/2021). According to him, the aid that was handed over was collected by students from Lanny Jaya from 10 districts in the Lapago Customary Area on March 22-24, 2021.

"From the action that was carried out for three days, students and the Lanny Jaya community [have collected] 21 boxes of instant noodles, two sacks of rice, a carton of cooking oil, one carton of instant coffee, one carton of sandals, 18 sacks of wearable clothes, and money worth Rp. 16. million. The items we collected were delivered directly to the Nduga [and Intan Jaya] refugees in Kuyawage on Thursday, ”said Melkyanus Wenda.

The prolonged armed conflict between the West Papua National Liberation Army and the TNI / Polri in Nduga and Intan Jaya Districts caused thousands of civilians to leave their hometowns and flee. Some of them fled to a number of neighboring districts, such as Nabire, Mimika, and Lanny Jaya Regencies.

Melkyanus said that the refugees in Lanny Jaya were scattered in several districts. “Refugees [from] Nduga [scattered] in Kwiyawage District, Goa Balim District, and West Wano District. We cannot confirm the number of refugees there. Our aid was immediately handed over to the existing refugee posts, then they would arrange it, ”he explained.

Wenda hopes that the assistance provided can be a blessing for the refugees. "The entire Lanny Jaya community hopes that this small contribution will benefit families who have fled from their own land, as a result of gunfire between the West Papua National Liberation Army and the TNI / Polri in Intan Jaya and Nduga," he said.

One of the refugees in Goa Balim District, Yehezkiel Kogoya, expressed his gratitude for the delivery of the aid. "We, from the refugees, would like to thank the people of Lanny Jaya and friends of the humanitarian team who have worked hard to raise goods and money for those who are currently in difficult circumstances. May God bless, "said Kogoya. (*)

2) 22 firms partner with vocational schools in Papua, W Papua
5 hours ago

Sorong, W Papua (ANTARA) - Twenty-two companies have signed an agreement on a strategic partnership program with vocational high schools in Papua and West Papua, according to a top official from the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture.

The agreement would boost efforts to strengthen the linkage between industries with vocational high schools in the two easternmost provinces, said Ahmad Saufi, director of partnership and linkage with companies and industries at the ministry's vocational education directorate, in Sorong city, West Papua on Saturday.

"Through this partnership, a link and match program can be strengthened,” he remarked.

The cooperation would help produce vocational school graduates with certified competencies and skills that meet the demands of the industrial sector, he said.

The partnering companies and associations include PT Intan Marine Product Development, PT Alam Papua, PT Medco Papua, PT Astra, PT Freeport Indonesia, Petrosea Tbk, BTM Al-Hijrah Sorong, CV Asli Papua Konsulindo, and the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI/Sorong chapter).

They also include PT Cobota, PT Indonesia Asahan Aluminium (Inalum), PT Panca Duta Karya (Sorong), Swiss-Belhotel (Sorong), PT Bank Papua Sorong, PT BNI 46 Tbk. (Sorong branch), PT Telkom Indonesia, Bank Mandiri (Sorong branch), PT Trakindo Sorong, Rumah BUMN BNI, West Papua's National Development Partnership Agency (LPKN), PT Salawati Motorindo (Sorong), and PT Pelayaran Belibis Papua Mandiri.

The development of human resources in Papua and West Papua remains a challenge. The Human Development Index scores of the two provinces lag behind other Indonesian provinces, with Papua and West Papua scoring 64.7 and 60.84, respectively, on Indonesia's 2019 Human Development Index.

To improve the quality of human capital in Papua and West Papua, the Indonesian Finance Ministry has suggested that the regional governments allocate an endowment fund to finance human resource development and the education of native Papuans.

The fund can be allocated from Papua province's annual budget, director of the Finance Ministry's Endowment Fund for Education (LPDP) Scholarship Program, Dwi Larso, stated.

The Papuan administration could adopt a similar endowment fund for education as the LPDP to support its human resources development efforts, he added. (INE)

3) Kick racism: Papuan soccer player receives supports after racially charged comments on his IG

Jayapura, Jubi – A soccer player with PSM Makassar, a football club in South Sulawesi, Patrich Wanggai, received a deluge of supports on his Instagram account @wanggaipatrich after he received racially charged attacks by some Instagram users.

The supportive comments now had drowned the racially charged comments on his Instagram, where supporters condemned the racially charged commenters. Very few racially charged comments appeared at the top, among the nearly 14,000 comments, and they mocked Wanggai’s physical features including his skin color.

Some who showed their support for Wanggai and condemned racism said they came to Wanggai’s account after hearing what happened to him but now they could not find the racially charged comments.

One user comment said: “I came here because I heard that a lot of people attacked you. But when I arrived here, it seemed the supportive comments had drowned the racially charged ones. I don’t follow soccer but I just wanted to say, keep your spirit up Pace. I apologize on behalf of those who commented without considering ethics. But many are proud of you.”

Pace referred to a friendly address for adult male in Papua, and Wanggai called himself Pace Nabire on his Instagram account. Nabire refers to his hometown in Papua province.

His club, PSM Makassar played against Jakarta’s club, Persija, on Monday, March 22, 2021 in Menpora Cup 2021, a competition organized by the Ministry of Youth and Sports. PSM Makassar scored 2 against nil by Persija. The first goal was made by Wanggai, with the assist from another Papuan player in PSM Makassar, Yakub Sayuri. Sayuri made the second goal for Makassar.

The match was held a day after the competition was opened on March 21. The competition was first to be held after the pandemic halted all soccer competitions.

PSM Makassar sent a complaint report to the Soccer Association of Indonesia (PSSI) about the incident.

“Our happiness that Indonesian soccer has risen again after a year of hiatus is supposed to be the joy of all soccer fans too. But it has been dampened and marred by the actions of a handful of people who attacked (Wanggai). Our player, Patrich Wanggai received rude, mocking and racially charged comments (on his Instagram),” PSM Makassar CEO Munafri Arifuddin said in the letter.

“We regret the racially charged comments and we would like to emphasize that we stand with Patrich Wanggai, with the same spirit and we want to reject any kinds of racism in Indonesian soccer, which we all love,” Munafri said.

The manager of Jayapura football club Persipura, Arvydays Ridwan Madubun, said he condemned the racially charged comments against Wanggai. He said he was disappointed that racism happened again in the soccer world.

4) Army in Yahukimo help locals get access to clean water
 7 hours ago

Kurima, Papua (ANTARA) - Several Indonesian army personnel recently shared and transferred knowledge on building a simple water purification device with residents of Kurima Sub-district, Yahukimo District, Papua Province, to enable them to get easy access to clean water.

With the water purification device, locals residing in the sub-district's mountainous area will no longer encounter difficulties in finding clean water, according to a military officer.

This simple device was made by using materials that the locals could easily find around them, Kurima Sub-district Security Post Second Lieutenant Denis Akbar stated here on Saturday.

"Materials used for this simple water purification device include sand, gravel, and charcoal," Akbar remarked.

Army personnel involved in this community service are part of the task force unit of the Army Strategic Reserves Command's (Kostrad's) Para Raider 432 Infantry Battalion.

Speaking in connection with this community service, the Kurima community leader, Elius, 65, expressed gratitude to the army personnel for the transfer of knowledge on making the water purification device.

Local community members often encounter difficulties in finding sources of clean water for their daily consumption, but the water purification device has brought about changes, he pointed out.

"We no longer faced problems in getting clean water, and we can practice leading a healthier and cleaner lifestyle," Elius remarked.

ANTARA noted that Indonesian soldiers in Papua and West Papua are necessitated to multitask, as the government works incessantly to address the issue of regional disparities in development between them and other provinces.

To this end, soldiers deployed in these two eastern provinces are mandated to be responsive in seeking solutions to problems and challenges faced by Papuan communities in their daily lives.

The soldiers are required to play the role of problem solvers for the local communities amid their central task to defend the country's territorial integrity and guard the safety of all Indonesians.

Sharing land and sea borders with Papua New Guinea (PNG), Papua and West Papua's geopolitical and geostrategic positions are indubitably important for Indonesia's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The development of human resources in Papua and West Papua remains a tricky challenge, as the Human Development Index scores of these provinces remains lower than that of other provinces in Indonesia.

Referring to Indonesia's 2019 Human Development Index, Papua and West Papua recorded scores of 64.7 and 60.84 respectively.

The literacy-related community services offered by Indonesian soldiers since several years have contributed notably to the regional and central government's endeavors to enhance the quality of human capital in Papua and West Papua.
