TEMPO.COJakarta - Papua Police Chief Insp. Gen. Mathius D. Fakhiri has instructed Resort Police headquarters in the region to tighten security at airports and airfields following the burning of a Cooper helicopter allegedly committed by the armed criminal group (KKB) at Aminggaru Ilaga Airport on April 11, 2021, at around 20:20 East Indonesian Time (WIT).

“The burning carried out by the KKB aimed at disrupting flight activities. So the Papua Police Chief has instructed resort police headquarters to closely guard vital objects, especially airports and airfields,” said Papua Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Ahmad Mustofa Kamal in a written statement on Monday, April 12, 2021.

Kamal said the burnt helicopter was an inoperative one due to malfunctions. He addedthat the perpetrators were members of the armed criminal group, namely Prenngen Telenggen, Abu Bakar Kogoya, Lerymayu Telenggen and Numbuk Telenggen.

According to him, the four people have been on the wanted list of the joint team of the Indonesian Military (TNI) and the National Police (Polri) to be prosecuted according to the law.

“The TNI-Polri are hunting down this group. We will take firm action against the KKB who carried out brutal actions in Ilaga,” said Kamal.

2) Police to deploy helicopter for evacuating Beoga residents in Papua
5 hours ago

Jayapura, Papua (ANTARA) - Police will dispatch a helicopter to evacuate residents from Beoga, Puncak, to Sugapa, Intan Jaya, as a precautionary measure against an armed criminal group's violent act, Papua Provincial Police Chief Inspector General Mathius Fakhiri stated.

"It is true that we plan to evacuate residents from Beoga to avoid an armed criminal group's violent act," Fakhiri noted here on Sunday.

Sugapa was selected since it is closer to Beoga as compared to Ilaga and Timika, he remarked.

Fakhiri could not furnish an exact count of the number of residents to be evacuated from Beoga owing to communication difficulties.

"No matter what their number is, we will strive to evacuate the residents, so they will no longer be besieged by fear. Moreover, two people, who fell victim, were teachers who had dedicated themselves to the region for quite a long time," he emphasized.

A junior high school teacher in Beoga Sub-district, Puncak District, Papua Province, died on Friday evening (April 9) following a lethal firing unleashed by an armed criminal group.

The junior high school teacher, identified as Yonatan Randen, was shot dead at his home in Julukoma Village near Beoga Airport on Friday at 4:45 p.m. local time.

Randen was the second junior high school teacher to have been shot dead this week.

On Thursday (April 8) at 9:30 a.m. eastern Indonesian time, the armed group shot dead a civilian Oktovianos Rayo, 42, a teacher living in Julukoma Village, Beoga, Papua.

Rayo was shot twice when he was about to enter his house. Later on in the day, the group set ablaze some schools in the village.

Nyoman stated that the bodies of Randen and Rayo are currently kept at the Beoga public health service post.

A joint team of the Indonesian military and police (TNI-Polri) has continued to hunt for members of the Nau Waker-led armed criminal group and ensured the people's safety in Puncak District, Papua.

"We will do our best to ensure the people's security," a spokesman of the Operation Nemangkawi Senior Commissioner Pol. M. Iqbal Alqudussy noted in a statement here on Friday.

3) Armed Papuan criminals torch civilian helicopter at Ilaga Airport
2 hours ago

Jayapura, Papua (ANTARA) - Several armed Papuan criminals torched a parked PT Ersa Air helicopter awaiting repair at the Ilaga Airport in Puncak District, Papua Province, on Sunday evening.

"As a result, the forward hull of the helicopter caught fire," Ilaga Airport Head Herman Sujito noted in a statement that ANTARA quoted here, Monday.

The ill-fated helicopter was parked at the airport since March 31, 2021, whilst awaiting the arrival of necessary spare parts to solve its engine problem, he noted.

Papua Police Chief Insp. Gen. Mathius Fakhiri confirmed that armed Papuan criminals had attempted to set ablaze a civilian helicopter at the Ilaga Airport.

Following the incident, the current situation at the airport is relatively secure and peaceful, but police officers stationed there are ordered to remain on standby, he stated.

Over these past four months, ANTARA noted that armed Papuan criminals had launched two attacks on civilian aircraft.

On January 6, 2021, some 10 armed Papuans had vandalized and torched a Quest Kodiak aircraft belonging to the Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF) at the Pagamba village airstrip.

The armed men, led by Sabinus Waker, reportedly set the utility aircraft ablaze shortly after its American pilot Alek Luferchek disembarked two passengers, Commander of the Cenderawasih Military Command, Maj. Gen. Ignatius Yogo Triyono, had stated in January.

The torching of the civilian aircraft, bearing registration number PK-MAX, was a brutal act since MAF planes were engaged in a decades-long noble mission for Papuan communities, he stated.

Triyono admitted that no Indonesian soldiers were stationed around Pagamba Village in Mbiandoga Sub-district, Intan Jaya District, though personnel were posted in Sugapa Sub-district.

In connection with the incident, Luferchek, the aircraft's pilot, had informed Papuan police officers that his aircraft was torched by about 10 men carrying assault rifles and guns.

The armed men suddenly emerged from some bushes soon after Luferchek landed the plane at the Pagamba village airstrip at around 9:30 a.m. local time.

According to the Papua police citing Luferchek's statement, several residents fled to save their lives after spotting the armed men walking towards the aircraft.

The armed men reportedly ordered the American pilot to disembark from the utility aircraft.

Pointing their rifles and guns at him, the men ordered Luferchek to sit on the ground.

The men thereafter unloaded the aircraft's cargo of food and then vandalized the plane and set it ablaze, but this 32-year-old pilot had managed to escape the attackers.

4) Killings of two Papuan teachers are inhuman: human rights defender
4 hours ago

Jayapura, Papua (ANTARA) - A human rights defender in Papua denounced the killings of two teachers in Beoga Sub-district, Puncak District, calling such assaults on them as being heinous and inhuman.

"The government needs to set up a joint team for probing the fatal shootings," Executive Director of the Justice and Papuan People Integrity (YKKMP) Theo Hesegem stated.

Hesegem was vociferous in condemning the killings of the two teachers, who had indeed contributed to edifying Papuans to become smart, Hesegem noted in a statement that ANTARA quoted here, Monday.

"The two teachers fell victims to the brutality of the armed Papuan criminals. What benefit did they actually gain by gunning down innocent civilians," he emphasized.

The non-native Papuan teachers, who come to Papua, deserve protection and respect of all elements in the Papuan society at large, including those from armed criminal groups.

"They come here for the development of Papua's human resources. Why are they shot dead?" he remarked, adding that akin to others, the two slain teachers also had the right to live in Papua.

Several armed Papuan criminals shot dead two teachers and set ablaze junior and senior high school buildings in Beoga Sub-district on April 8-9, 2021.

Consequently, several local residents fled their homes and sought refuge at a military post in the sub-district.

Security disturbances have been reported sporadically from several areas, such as the districts of Puncak and Intan Jaya, where armed Papuan groups operate.

Intan Jaya recorded its bloodiest month in September 2020, with notorious armed groups launching a string of attacks in the area that killed two soldiers and two civilians while inflicted injuries on two others.

These armed Papuan groups have continued their acts of terror during the new year.

On January 6, 2021, some 10 armed Papuans vandalized and torched a Quest Kodiak aircraft belonging to the Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF) at the Pagamba Village airstrip.

The armed groups often employ hit-and-run tactics against Indonesian security personnel, while they unleash acts of terror against civilians to instill a sense of fear among the people.

On February 8, 2021, an armed rebel reportedly shot a 32-year-old man at close range in Bilogai Village, Sugapa Sub-district.

The victim, identified by his initials as RNR, sustained gunshot wounds on the face and right shoulder and was taken to the Timika Public Hospital in Mimika District on February 9.

On February 9, 2021, six armed Papuans had fatally stabbed a motorcycle taxi (ojek) driver.

5) Armed Papuans that killed two Beoga teachers are terrorists: House

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Armed Papuan criminals, who shot dead two teachers in Puncak District, Papua Province, were terrorists, according to House of Representatives (DPR) Deputy Speaker Azis Syamsuddin.

"Almost every year, armed criminal groups conduct their acts of terror against civilians in Papua," Syamsuddin noted in a statement that ANTARA quoted here, Monday.

However, Indonesian security personnel, stationed in the province, are still slow in tracing and cracking down on the perpetrators behind the acts of terror.

The armed criminals' deadly assaults on the ill-fated teachers were indeed acts of terrorism, he noted, adding that he extended his deep condolences over their deaths.

The stationed Indonesian military and police personnel should be able to create a sense of security and dispel fear of the armed criminals' acts of terror from the minds of people at large.

"To this end, with a sufficient number of personnel, the military and police must continue to secure all neighborhood areas. Do not allow civilians to again fall victim," he remarked.

Syamsuddin further urged all related parties in the country to seek a comprehensive solution to Papua’s problems, so that locals can gain perpetual peace and prosperity.

Several armed Papuan criminals shot dead two teachers and set ablaze junior and senior high school buildings in Beoga Sub-district, Puncak District, on April 8-9, 2021.

Consequently, several local residents fled their homes and sought refuge at a military post.

Papua Police Chief Insp. Gen. Mathius Fakhiri affirmed that the locals would soon be evacuated to Sugapa Sub-district in Intan Jaya District.

"The violent acts of the armed Papuan criminals are brutal," Fakhiri noted, adding that some 25 personnel of the police's elite Mobile Brigade unit, stationed at the Beoga police precinct, partook in the efforts to secure and protect the refugees.

Security disturbances have been reported sporadically from several areas, such as the districts of Puncak and Intan Jaya, where armed Papuan groups operate.

Intan Jaya recorded its bloodiest month in September 2020, with notorious armed groups launching a series of attacks in the area that claimed the lives of two soldiers and two civilians and left two others injured.
