1) Lukas Enembe’s lawyer named obstruction of justice suspect

Nur Janti (The Jakarta Post) Jakarta   ●   Wed, May 10, 2023

The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) named Stefanus Roy Rening, a lawyer of suspended Papua governor Lukas Enembe, as suspect of obstruction of justice and is detaining him for 20 days.

After questioning Stefanus for six hours on Tuesday, KPK said they had found enough evidence of Stefanus creating scenarios to hamper the KPK investigation of a graft case involving Lukas by influencing witnesses to make false testimony, not to answer the antigraft body’s summons and to prevent witnesses from handing over the alleged graft money to investigators. KPK investigators announced Stefanus would be detained at the Naval Military Police Command Headquarters (Puspomal) in North Jakarta until May 28.

“According to the criminal procedure law, the witness' attendance is a legal obligation," KPK deputy chairman Nurul Ghufron said on Tuesday, as quoted by kompas.id. Prior to naming Stefanus as a suspect, the antigraft body had slapped a travel ban on him and three other witnesses of Lukas’ graft case, namely Gerius One Yoman, Fredrik Banne and Sukman. The antigraft body keeps digging deeper to develop Lukas' graft case after naming Lukas a money laundering suspect on April 12 and a graft suspect in September.

Lukas allegedly accepted bribes amounting to Rp 1 billion (US$67,889) from Rijatono Lakka, director of a contractor company in Papua, for approving the latter’s tender for government infrastructure projects. Rijatono was named a corruption suspect in January. Before being detained at the KPK Detention Center, Lukas repeatedly avoided the KPK summons, citing health concerns, with Lukas’ legal team pushing for medical treatment outside the country.

The KPK rejected the proposal and slapped a travel ban on Lukas in September. (dre)

2) Two patients died during fire evacuation at Abepura Hospital
News Desk - Abepura Hospital Fire

Jayapura, Jubi – The head of General Affairs and Public Relations of Abepura Regional General Hospital, Conny Tan, has confirmed that two patients died while being evacuated from the treatment room after a fire broke out in the hospital’s logistics warehouse on Tuesday, May 9, 2023.

Two patients named Kristina Mano and Yuli Elopere have died. They were being treated in the ICU room and the lung room respectively when the warehouse on the second floor caught fire. “Both patients were already in critical condition and unfortunately did not survive the incident,” Tan told reporters.

According to Tan, some of the inpatients were moved to the parking lot during the fire. She mentioned that the patients would be brought back to their original treatment rooms once the hospital was confirmed safe for them to do so.

“Heat and smoke are still present. We need to ensure that the fire is fully put out before we can bring back the patients to their respective rooms. We will only do so once the fire department has declared the area safe,” Tan explained.

Petrus Benyamin Pepuho, the Deputy Director of General and Finance at Abepura Hospital, stated that the medical equipment warehouse that caught fire also stored consumables, medical devices, and linen materials such as mattresses, fabrics, and blankets.

As many as 53 patients were evacuated from various rooms such as the pediatric ward, emergency room, ICU, surgery, neurology, lung, and male and female internal medicine rooms as the smoke entered through the air ventilator.

Jayapura City Fire chief Kirana suspected the fire was caused by an electrical short circuit. According to her, the fire spread quickly because Abepura Hospital had no fire management.

Kirana said the fire incident should serve as a reminder for all hospitals in Jayapura City to prioritize fire management. She also emphasized the importance of utilizing the special autonomy funds for health to improve fire safety measures in hospitals, which would not only protect patients but also the hospital infrastructure. She further added that collaboration with the Papua Provincial Government was necessary to install fire hydrants in hospitals since they were currently not available.

Papua Police deputy Brig. Gen. Ramdani Hidayat said his office deployed 50 police officers to help extinguish the fire and evacuate patients and health workers. He said the Papua Police would investigate the cause of the fire. “We are still investigating the cause of the fire,” he told reporters. (*)

News Desk - Sexual Violence Cases
11 May 2023

Jayapura, Jubi – Ha-Anim Women’s Association (PPHA) chair Febi Koten highlighted eight cases of sexual violence against children that took place in Merauke Regency, South Papua Province between 2021 and 2023. The protection of children and women from sexual violence and abuse is a matter that requires the attention and efforts of all parties.

Febi said that from 2021 to 2023, there were at least 11 cases of sexual violence in Merauke Regency. Of that number, eight cases were experienced by children between 3 and 17 years old. Meanwhile, the other three cases were experienced by victims aged 27 to 37.

“From our identification, victims of sexual violence are predominantly children,” Febi toldJubi on Tuesday, May 9, 2023.

Febi said the case data was compiled from media reports. She noted that the majority of the perpetrators of sexual violence against children were people who were close to the victims, such as friends, neighbors and the victim’s biological fathers.

PPHA spokesperson Maria Goreti said there must be serious efforts to prevent cases of sexual violence and harassment. She urged all parties to provide education about forms of sexual violence, to prevent new cases from occurring.

Goreti urged all members of society to come together and oppose any kind of violence against women and children. She encouraged people to take part in the fight against violence and sexual harassment through all available media platforms.

“And the police must handle all offenders of sexual crimes according to the established legal process,” Goreti said in a written statement received by Jubi on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, PPHA member Magda Lomanop said women must protect each other and unite against any sexual violence and harassment.

“These cases make us realize that sexual violence is a threat to every woman, especially children. And the perpetrators are not only strangers but can also be individuals close to the victim,” she said. (*)
