1) JDP hopes peace in West Papua undisrupted following soldiers' killing

Manokwari, W Papua (ANTARA) - The Papua Peace Network (JDP) expresses hope that the killing of four soldiers in Maybrat District in the early hours of Thursday would not disrupt peace that has been well-established in West Papua.

To this end, JDP spokesperson Yan Christian Warinussy fully supported a statement made by Commander of the XVIII/Kasuari Regional Military Command Mj. Gen. I Nyoman Cantiasa following the fatal attack.

Cantiasa was quoted by Warinussy as saying that the Indonesian Military (TNI) personnel have established sound communication with the residents of Kisor Village in South Aifat Sub-district.

"If there was good communication between the TNI personnel and local residents, the attackers mostly likely came from outside Maybrat District," he noted in a statement that ANTARA quoted here Friday.

In their efforts to trace and crackdown on the perpetrators, Cantiasa and his men are expected to adopt a persuasive approach by involving local religious leaders, he noted.

To this end, Cantiasa is looking to forge good communication with the Bishop of Sorong and Papua's Indonesian Christian Church (GKI) Synod to find the root cause of problems and to restore and preserve peace.

The JDP is optimistic that a military operation would never be conducted for handling the Kisor attack case, Warinussy stated.

In the early hours of Thursday (Sept 2, 2021), members of an unidentified terrorist group ambushed several soldiers while they were sleeping at the Kisor military post.

As a result, 2nd Sergeant Amrosius, Chief Private Dirham, First Private Zul Ansari, and First Lieutenant Dirman died, according to spokesperson for the XVIII/Kasuari Regional Military Command Lt Col Hendra Pesireron.

The bodies of three soldiers were found at the post, while another was discovered in the bushes not far from the post, Pesireron remarked, adding that another soldier, First Private Ikbal, was not yet traceable.

The assault on the Kisor military post in West Papua has added to the list of cases of armed violence in Papua and highlighted the grave danger posed by Papuan separatist terrorists.

In the midst of the government's handling of the COVID-19 pandemic in Papua and West Papua, the two provinces have been reeling from armed violence over the past few months of 2021.

In April this year, two teachers in Julukoma Village, Beoga Sub-district, Puncak District, were killed by armed Papuan terrorists.

On August 22, 2021, a terrorist group operating in Yahukimo District attacked several construction workers of PT Indo Mulia Baru that were involved in erecting a bridge on Brazza River.

Two workers, identified as Rionaldo Ratu Roma and Dedi Imam Pamungkas, died in the attack, according to director of Papua Police's Criminal Investigation Unit, Sen. Coms. Faisal Rahmadani.

The attackers also set their bodies and their pick-up truck on fire, he noted.

Members of the terrorist group also attacked several personnel from the Indonesian Police's Mobile Brigade (Brimob) unit when they went to the site of the shooting to evacuate the deceased workers' bodies, he remarked.

Four Brimob personnel sustained minor injuries, he remarked, adding that several construction workers were evacuated to Dekai, the capital of Yahukimo District, for safety reasons.

Following the Olympic games, the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games were held from August 24 to September 5, he noted.

Papua has come under the spotlight of Indonesia's media outlets, as it is scheduled to host this year's PON National Games and National Para Games (Peparnas).

Meanwhile, 1,935 athletes and 740 officials will take part in the National Para Games in Jayapura City and Jayapura District that will feature 12 events.
