1) TNI offers assistance to Papuans displaced by attacks
11:42 am today
Indonesia's military says it is providing support for West Papuan villagers displaced after recent deadly violence in Maybrat regency.
The military, or TNI, has also been co-ordinating with local authorities to facilitate a return home for the displaced people.
Several thousand people were estimated to have fled after pro-independence West Papuan fighters attacked the Kisor Koramil military post in Maybrat at the start of this month.
Four Indonesian soldiers were killed, and numerous others injured in the attack. A manhunt is underway for the perpetrators.
Colonel Hendra Pesireron, the spokesman for the Kasuari XVIII Military Command spokesman, said they had been providing food, health and clothing relief, as well as logistic support to communities in several of Maybrat's districts.
This includes assistance directed to residents of villages who were housing displaced people from other parts of the area, while engineer capabilities were deployed to repair damaged transport infrastructure in the area.
According to Pesireron, Indonesia's military stood ready to assist displaced communities return to their villages safely, in co-ordination with the Regent of Maybrat, Bernard Sagrim.
A West Papuan church group told RNZ Pacific earlier this month that Papuans who had fled from the violence were fearful of the military mobilisation and unsure of their security.
However, Sagrim addressed a number of displaced communities to assure them of their safety.
He told people not to be afraid of the military and police apparatus in their area, saying the security forces were there to provide protection.
Sagrim said that residents who returned to their homes would be escorted, and their return facilitated by the government.

A faction of the West Papua Liberation Army has claimed responsibility for the deadly attack on the military post in Maybrat.
Other regencies to have experienced recent violent attacks involving the Liberation Army and Indonesian forces since 2018 include Intan Jaya, Puncak Jaya, Nduga and in recent days also Pegunungan Bintang Regency.

Deadly attack in Oksibil

Indonesian authorities have pointed blame at the Liberation Army for another deadly attack this month in remote Oksibil district in Pegunungan Bintang.
The attack resulted in a classroom and health centre were being down in the district, close to the border with Papua New Guinea.
One medical worker was killed in the attack, with local authorities saying dozens of Liberation Army members also tried to stab several other medical workers before they managed to escape.
However, Papuan sources claim Indonesian armed forces were behind the attack which destroyed the public facilities as an attack on the Liberation Army.
The pro-independence fighters also destroyed equipment being used by an Indonesian construct team for the Trans Papuan road project in the same district this month.

2) PON: 1,500 military, police personnel to be deployed in Mimika
 2 hours ago

Timika (ANTARA) - A total of 1,500 military and police personnel will be deployed to secure the XX Papua National Sports Week (PON) in Mimika District, a senior official has said.

Police chief of Mimika District, Adjunct Senior Commissioner IGG Era Adhinata, said that the successful holding of the event will require full support from all people in the region.

"Any numbers of the security personnel deployed will not be adequate without the community’s assistance and support. We need the participation of the entire community in Mimika to maintain the security and comfort amid the XX Papua PON," he remarked at a gathering of the XX Papua PON security force in the Timika Indah Square on Saturday.

Furthermore, at least 997 personnel of the Indonesian National Police will be deployed to secure the event, he added.

Apart from the Mimika Regional Police, the Nusantara Mobile Brigade Corps, which has currently started to be stationed in the district, will also help secure the event, Adhinata said.

Meanwhile, the Indonesian National Defence Forces will post 485 personnel to the XX PON cluster, he informed.

In addition, the security forces will be assisted by the Public Order Officer of the Mimika district government, search and rescue personnel from Timika city – the capital of the district -- as well as several community organizations and associations, he added.

Furthermore, the district police chief informed that the gathering of the security forces would be followed by operation training.

Troops will be posted in 10 locations all over the region, he said. In addition, they will be stationed at every sports venue and participants’ inn, he disclosed.

Regarding the potential for security disruption amid the implementation of the national event, Adhinata emphasized that his personnel will detect, anticipate, as well as immediately respond to any security issues.

"No matter how small the disruption, we must anticipate it. The team has to respond to the disturbance soon, thus it will not escalate and spread any bias everywhere," he added.

Meanwhile, the commander of the 1710 District Military Command in Mimika District, Lieutenant Colonel Yoga Cahya Prasetya, invited the residents of Mimika to do their best for the participating athletes and officials who come to the region.

Furthermore, he encouraged residents to show that they are able to hold the national event safely and comfortably.

“It requires the participation of all residents," he remarked.

Mimika will host nine sports competitions for 12 events of the XX Papua PON, which will be held from October 2-15, 2021.

However, a number of contingents from outside Papua province have already begun to arrive in the district. It is estimated that four thousand athletes and officials from outside the province will attend the national sporting event.
