1) West Papua police chief condemns killing of Kisor soldiers

Sorong, W Papua (ANTARA) - West Papua Police chief Inspector General Tornagogo Sihombing has condemned the killing of four soldiers at Kisor military post in the early hours of Thursday and called their assailants "savages".

 

"Amid the COVID-19 pandemic situation, we still find savages. The attackers' acts of violence are brutal," he told journalists in Sorong, West Papua province on Friday.

 

In the early hours of Thursday (September 2, 2021), members of an unidentified terrorist group ambushed several soldiers while they were sleeping at the Kisor military post of South Aifat sub-district, Maybrat district, West Papua province.

 

Four soldiers—2nd Sergeant Amrosius, Chief Private Dirham, First Private Zul Ansari, and First Lieutenant Dirman—died in the attack, according to spokesperson for the XVIII/Kasuari Regional Military Command, Lt Col Hendra Pesireron.

The bodies of three soldiers were found at the post, while another was discovered in the bushes not far from the post, Pesireron informed, adding that another soldier, First Private Ikbal, remained untraceable.

 

Sihombing said two suspects had been arrested in connection with the attack and detained at South Sorong Police Precinct for investigation.

 

As of Friday, however, police investigators were still continuing their probe to determine the attackers' motives and identify the armed group they belong to, he said.

 

"We still call the perpetrators as an unidentified group," he said, adding that police investigators along with their colleagues from the 181/PVT District Military Command had conducted a crime scene investigation.

Meanwhile, Commander of the XVIII/Kasuari Regional Military Command, Major General I Nyoman Castiasa, on Friday led a military procession as a mark of respect for the fallen soldiers before their caskets were transported to their hometowns for funeral.

 

Castiasa said the police had arrested two suspects in relation to the Kisor military post attack, but he has yet to know the exact number of perpetrators responsible for the killing of the four soldiers.

 

He appealed to several members of the community in West Papua who still oppose the state to end the conflict and work together to develop the province for the sake of prosperity for all.

"If they are stubborn and continue their campaign of insurgency, they will be crushed," he remarked.

 

The assault on the Kisor military post in West Papua has added to the list of cases of armed violence in Papua and highlighted the grave danger posed by Papuan separatist terrorists.

Jakarta (ANTARA) - House Speaker Puan Maharani has urged the government to conduct a thorough investigation into Thursday's attack on a military post in West Papua Province that resulted in the deaths of four army personnel.

Maharani also offered deep condolences to the families of the fallen army soldiers.

“This is condolence to the entire Indonesian nation. Let me extend my deep condolences to the families of military personnel that were killed while performing their duties in Aifat Sub-district,” she emphasized.

Investigation into the fatal attack should also cover the identification of problems, so that similar incidents do not recur and increase in future, she cautioned.

Maharani stressed on the importance of preventive efforts to protect civilians and soldiers from falling victims to such attacks in future, so that their wives and children will not lose important members of their families.

Security and stability in Papua and West Papua must be prioritized the more so since Papua will host the 20th National Sports Week (PON) in October 2021, she affirmed.

“Regardless of the event, equitable development can be realized and enjoyed by the people if stability and security is maintained, she emphasized.

"The suspects have admitted their involvement," Commander of the XVIII/Kasuari Regional Military Command, Major General I Nyoman Castiasa, said after paying his respects on the fallen soldiers on Friday.

The two suspects have been placed under police custody for further investigation, he informed, adding that he has yet to know the exact number of perpetrators who are responsible for the deaths of the four soldiers.

In the midst of the government's handling of the COVID-19 pandemic in Papua and West Papua, the two provinces have been reeling under armed violence over the past few months of 2021.

In April this year, two teachers in Julukoma village, Beoga sub-district, Puncak district, were killed by armed Papuan terrorists.

On August 22, 2021, a terrorist group operating in Yahukimo district attacked several construction workers of PT Indo Mulia Baru who were involved in erecting a bridge on Brazza River.

Two workers, identified as Rionaldo Ratu Roma and Dedi Imam Pamungkas, died in the attack, according to director of Papua Police's Criminal Investigation Unit, Sen. Coms. Faisal Rahmadani.

The attackers also set their bodies and their pick-up truck on fire, he informed.

Members of the terrorist group also attacked several personnel from the Indonesian Police's Mobile Brigade (Brimob) unit when they went to the site of the shooting to evacuate the deceased workers' bodies, he said.

Four Brimob personnel sustained minor injuries, he said, adding that several construction workers were evacuated to Dekai, the capital of Yahukimo district, for safety reasons.
