AWPA calls on PIF leaders to condemn the arrest of 80 West Papuan activists

AWPA calls on the Pacific Islands Forum leaders to condemn the arrest of 80 West Papuan activists by the Indonesian security forces. 

The activists were holding a rally in support of the Pacific Islands Forum urging the PIF leaders to support Vanuatu’s call to bring the issue of West Papua to the UN.

According to the ULMWP, 45 people were arrested in Sentani and 34 were reported arrested in Abepura

In a report the Free West Papua Campaign said up to 100 Police including Intelligence Personnel and a number of members of Detachment 88 were involved in the operation. 

Joe Collins of AWPA said, "we call on our Foreign Minister Marise Payne and the other PIF leaders to condemn the arrests and urge Jakarta again to allow a PIF fact finding mission to investigate the human rights situation in the territory”.
